Every USB and Cloud archive comes with a Comfort Letter. This confirms that authenticity of the content on the archive.
A Comfort Letter states the following:
- Which Data Room the archive contains
- Which perspective it is
- Date and time of the request
- Which reports are on it
- A Hash code
This hash code is a mathematical integer which acts like an identity for an object. It differs from one object to another. Comparing the hash code is a convenient way of checking if the file on the USB is in fact the file we created or if the file has been altered. As every change, however small it may be, results in a completely different hash code.
Here is an example of a Comfort Letter:
To check if the hash code matches the one in the Comfort Letter, use the 7-Zip. file you received from the USB. (Mac users can follow the steps in this website.)
- Right mouse click on the file and choose for 7-Zip.
- Click on "CRC-SHA" and after this choose the "SHA-256" option.
Read the SHA-256 code to compare it to the one in your comfort letter.
